cl um ps of daddy’s h air
sealed in a Zip loc
Mama kept the baggies
in a cardboard bo x
beneath photos of him
laughing he loved
laughing
big black work boots stillat the door
top three holes not looped up with
shoe laces I wore them to
school and they called me
a clown but daddy wasn’t no
clown he was a hero
I cried
every
night.
his casket was hickory
hickck, oh me
hickory and dirt
was black like boots and I
couldn’t get a grrriiip
so I ran nran nran to the liquor store
lick of horror, liquor store
and I bought
his favorite whis key
because anyone will let you
do anything when you are
crying and your daddy’s de-
ad nauseam, nausea kickin'mekickn'mekickin'mekickin'mekickin'mekickin'me
in my stomach
before rising to my throat in l u mp- l u mp -l u mps
like a horse pill is lodged-lodged-lodged in--
my voice is hoarse and-and-and-and-and--
and i miss my daddy so much.
breathe gaaaaaaaaaaasp breathe gaaaaaaaaaaasp breathe
he wouldn't want me so caught up
but i hope he went up
into
that
sta(i)r
way
of heaven.
and i hope jesus gave him a hug
at the gate for me.
there's an interlude in these dusty ol' tracks
and i gotta find another song
that doesn't have me clingingtotherecordstacks
in hopes of digging through them to find
my daddy again.
so i the needle
dropped
into my skin
so i can always remember my papa
as i got his initials inked in my arm
and it's a special kind of coincidence
because i will always love
Isaac Leslie Young.
